What is Safety Village?

Mariemont’s Safety Village is a fun, five day safety awareness camp held at Mariemont Elementary School that is designed for children entering kindergarten. This drop off camp will be led by a Safety Village camp teacher, along with student volunteer camp counselors and MPPG Committee Co-Chairs.

Through the use of music, crafts, videos, books, community speakers and a child-sized town, the children are taught basic safety lessons that they will use for the rest of their lives. Every day the children will face new challenges as they learn the proper way to cross the street, buckle their seat belt, wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, and understand basic traffic rules. Other safety lessons such as stranger danger, water safety, fire safety, riding the school bus, and how to dial 911 will also be covered.

Teacher Bios

Christie Motz – AM Camp Teacher

This will be Christie Motz’s 8th summer teaching Safety Village! Prior to living in Mariemont, she taught kindergarten in Mason City Schools for 9 years before leaving to stay home with her now 11 year old son Teddy, 6 year old son Jack, and 5 year old daughter Anna. She recently accomplished a lifelong dream of publishing a children’s book and absolutely adores teaching children of all ages – but kindergarten is her favorite! She loves the Safety Village program because of the sense of community it builds in Mariemont Elementary’s newest little learners and she is so grateful to be a part of it each year!

Hannah Donnelly – PM Camp Teacher

This will be Hannah Donnelly’s second summer teaching Safety Village! Hannah grew up in Mariemont and now lives here with her husband, Nick, their three children (Dailey, Rory, and Seamus), and their giant dog, Duncan. As both a parent and an educator, she believes in the importance of letting kids be little – even as they practice big skills like crossing the street, riding the bus, and asking for help. With a background in special education and educational advocacy, Hannah loves working with the rising kindergarten crew and helping kids feel safe, confident, and proud of themselves. She loves Safety Village for the way it balances fun and learning while celebrating childhood, and she’s excited to be part of a program that brings so much joy (and a little independence!) to Mariemont’s youngest learners each summer.
